Interview with Mr Gabor Molnar, managing director of Arctic Green Engineering

Interview with Mr Gabor Molnar, managing director of Arctic Green Engineering

Budapest, Hungary Gábor Molnár, Managing Director of Arctic Green Engineering, will speak at the upcoming Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit (Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit) on September 20, 2024. In his interview with CEENERGY NEWS , Molnár highlighted the steady growth of the geothermal market in Central and Eastern Europe, driven by its low emissions and stable energy supply. Despite challenges like high upfront costs and drilling uncertainties, he emphasized the importance of geophysical surveys and regulatory support to mitigate risks. Molnár noted that both industrial and residential sectors are increasingly investing in geothermal energy due to its reliability as a baseload source. He called for better regulatory frameworks and risk mitigation measures to enhance geothermal adoption. He also discussed recent technological advances and successful projects, such as drilling near Nyíregyháza, demonstrating geothermal's untapped potential in Hungary and beyond. Molnár sees a bright future for geothermal energy, with the potential to revolutionize heating, cooling, and electricity production, especially as part of a combined renewable energy approach. Xiong'an Geothermal Heating and Cooling

Xiong'an Geothermal Heating and Cooling

In 2009, Xiong'an city had exceptionally poor air quality due to the city's heavy reliance on fossil fuel power plants. The city's population of 1.1 million suffered.

Between 2009 and 2014 our JV Sinopec Green Energy developed an extensive geothermal district heating system, replacing the old fossil fuel infrastructure. The city is now home to 1.8 million people, with heating capacity of 7.2 million m2. It runs on heat flows from 128 wells and 54 heat centrals. It has a mix of heating, cooling, energy storage, photovoltaic power generation and more applications under development.

Declared "China's first smog free city" and a National Showcase in 2014 by the Chinese National Energy Authority and National Reform and Development Commission.

Inhabitants enjoy a higher quality of life with cleaner air, better health, and cheaper heating energy.

Undergoing transformation to become the Deputy Capital of China.

In 2021, the geothermal utilization in Xiong'an was selected by IRENA as a global showcase in the energy transistion.

Breathing Cities

We use geothermal to transform cities one building, one street, one neighborhood at a time. We replace fossil fuel heat sources (oil and coal) with renewable geothermal heat. As the world has rapidly developed with a heavy reliance on fossil fuels, our cities have suffered and billions have been condemned to live with unhealthy air quality. Geothermal can help change that.

Heating and Cooling

Heating and cooling cities in the 21st century will determine the outcome of the battles against air pollution and greenhouse emissions. Heating and cooling are major contributors to air pollution, greenhouse emissions and global warming. Over 66% of energy generated globally comes from fossil fuels. Over 45% of all energy generated is for space heating. In cities heated with burning coal more than 50% of the air pollution comes from heating. Geothermal energy is the only renewable source that is base-load, on 24/7, and therefore, ideal for heating. Geothermal heating surpasses coal and gas heating both environmentally and financially
